I'm sat on the sofa with a coffee right now, eagerly awaiting the next rumble of thunder and flash of lightening against the midnight blue sky outside. Monty Don's Italian Gardens, a beautiful BBC2 programme on Fridays at 9pm at the moment, is about to start. It's about Rennaisance Gardens in Italy, this week focusing on Florence. Last week was Rome where, amongst others, he visited the garden of Villa D'este in Tivoli, hence the above photos. Cardinal Ippolito D'este took a third of Tivoli's water supply to create the numerous water features througout the garden, aswell as allegedly taking statues from the 2000 year old (or 1500 at the time) Hadrian's Villa, also situated in Tivoli. I would really recommend catching up with the programme on BBC iplayer - the scenes of Italy are just stunning and the stories behind these gardens are very interesting. The photos i've picked out do not do Villa D'este's garden justice at all but i didn't have much time to compose this post.
Lots of love
Lucy
