My Meeting with the Lipstick Queen!

She's sweet,unique and best of all she's a professional girly girl,my dream job!!! Her name is Poppy King and she is a lipstick brain child,literally she was 18 when she created Poppy industries back in her home Australia. Her indie company shot to millions within months. This situation was a wild lipstick fairy tale with many challenges that where tried and true and unconventionally dealt with,winning her ultimate feet,being bought out by Barnie's NY. She managed to conquer and deliver many lipstick obstacles in the cosmetic industry.

A few days ago I was talking about going to Henri Bendel to get lipstick wonder Poppy King to sign my book (and I made her kiss it) "Lessons of a Lipstick Queen". We chatted,she put a bunch of different super shiny glosses on my pouty lips. I loved every single color,but settled on one lipstick one gloss. She lives downtown so one day we might get lunch. Oh and "Gossip Girl" star Blake Lively came in and bought 7 copies.




So one of the glosses I got was Silver Shimmer. Wear it alone in the sun light your lips will sparkle its basically clear. She applied it over a matte lipstick (which she is famous for inventing as a teen in the 90's)

Read this inspiring book by Poppy King. I've talked about it before and I can't stress it enough. It's a get ahead book with a wonderful tale of a wayward teen aged girl who couldn't find the perfect shade or consistency of lipstick. She then went on to make it within months she reached one million in sales. She will be doing a signing at HENRI BENDEL this week starting the 11th. I can't wait to meet this incredible business woman. She sold her line to Barney's NY a top notch world renown department store.

Coincidently as I was at the dog park I started talking to this attractive man with this larger than life aura. He was with his 2 gorgeous rhinestone pimped out pooches,while enjoying conversation with I "Kristen May Anastasia", exchanged info and then this bell inside my head went off like a siren inside. I'm gonna be a virtual Too Faced pimptress all week on my blog!!! I adore Too Faced,I enjoy picking out from their array of color palettes and pretty casings...When I put it on between the advertising campaigns and packaging I feel like some super bad girly girl. In celebration of all this I want to introduce you all to little bit of my friend Scott Nathan the rock star photographer behind the genius!!!

-How did you get involved with Too Faced?

I was introduced to them via a mutual friend named Sarah Heath. She's the veteran marketing wizard behind such brands as Urban Decay, Hard Candy & Smashbox cosmetics.

-Do you come up with the concept of the shoot all on your own,do they leave most of the creative work to the genius behind the camera,or is it all very much a collaborative effort?

As they say,"It takes a village" to make a great conceptual photograph. The entire crew and post production team are every bit as crucial as the creative itself.

I'm big on research and encourage everyone involved to bring scrap to the table. That is, we all show up at creative meetings with inspirations of all kinds. Magazine pages old & new. Paintings, drawings, ads. Some might have nothing to do with it but a lighting look. Another, a piece of furniture. And via these sometimes hundreds of images, we begin to shape a campaign.

-Who is the Too Faced girl?

The Too Faced logo is a character called "Envy" created by Too Faced Cosmetics Founder Jerrod Blandino. To me, she is the woman that all girls want to be, and all guys want to be with. She's strong, whip smart, independent and stylish. A kind of Bond girl meets Madonna I suppose.

-Are you the one in charge of casting the Too Faced models?

While I'm a definite part of the process, it is, however a group decision between the marketing team, myself and the CEO Jerrod Blandino.

-Give us a little history on you and Two Faced, how did you meet and end up landing such a great opportunity to shoot their advertisements which are nothing short of artistic beauty across a page with a cameo on top.

-Would you like to tell us just a little bit about the new campaign or is it top secret stuff?

Tell us a bit about your back ground???

-I moved to New York from Maui Hawaii. I will always be an Maui girl and I try and go home as much as I can. I was a rock musician and a co-producer of a Zine for around 10 years there before I decided to pursue Makeup.
My love of makeup, I attribute to a few things: my oldest sister who was a model, my love of art, gay men, rock and roll and all things beautiful and decadent.

Will you be here for NYC fashion week or what?
If so what shows will you be working on?

-I am working the Rock & Republic show and a few others.

What's the best editorial or project you worked on? Who are the coolest people you've been able to collaborate with?

-I've gotten to work with so many amazing people, it’s hard to say. I really love working with Alex Covo (www.fatpuppystudio.com). I also love working with the awesome people at PlaztikMag.com!
The best time I had working on something was ‘the Good Shepherd’, it was like nothing I had experienced before. The crew was incredible. I wouldn’t be doing what I am today if I hadn’t worked on that film. I owe the Hair and Makeup department of the Good Shepherd so much, they’re really remarkable people.

What is your favorite make up book to live by and what products to you fancy?

-To be honest, I’m not that crazy about makeup books. I really would rather look at an art book or watch a film and be inspired by that.
When I was younger I picked up a copy of Kevyn Aucoin’s book ‘Making Faces’ and I knew that’s what I wanted to be doing.
As for products, I really love a lot of different things, but I’ll try to think of a few I couldn’t live without:

-I think great makeup is all about gorgeous skin so finding the right foundation is key. For the day I like to focus on lashes and cheeks and for night even bigger lashes and bold lip colors.

-I’m inspired a lot by film, art and old Hollywood glamor.
