The Big Picture

I came across the Boston Globe's Big Picture site recently and was truly blown away by some of the images. It tells world news through photographs. Here's some of the photos...

These first two are on the series of photos showing immigration all around the world, the first is from March 2011 and the second May:

These are all pictures of an ash-covered Chile after the volcanic eruption that happened on June 4th:

These next photos are from May's collection of pictures taken of Afghanistan. They do a series every month:

Drug users having a nap.
These are from the April series on Afghanistan:

I would really recommend checking out all the other photos on this site. I've missed out some of the more heartbreaking and sometimes gruesome images in the collections that are just as significant in getting across the reality of life for many people all over the world. Doing a post like this really makes me feel inadequate - it's clear through looking at these photographs and others on the site that these aren't just pretty pictures to look at, they have a stronger meaning that they are getting across of the brutal reality of life for many people around the world at this point in time. Politics isn't my strong point so i'm not going to say anything about 'what we should be doing' in order to help these people. So many situations are so fucked up in the world that without the cooperation and benevolence of everyone there really isn't much hope of a positive future for everyone. But to be honest i really don't know what i'm talking about. As i said politics aren't my strong point and these days it seems to me that it has to be if you're going to make a difference in the world. My philosophy, and i'm aware that i'm not the only one in this, is simply to be as good as possible. I'm not going to bother trying to define 'good' but i reckon it's just about enough to make a difference in the world, without having to know the ins and outs of all the isms. I'm gonna shut up now...

Lots of love
Lucy
