Devendra Banhart

Man oh man oh man...long time no see! I'm not done with these exams yet but i'm goin' a lil bit crazy...all this time sat inside 'revising' isn't even paying off because i day dream too much and get sucked into listening to music instead of looking at textbooks. Haha i'm not gonna go on but i doubt i'll get into uni and the thought actually makes me happy?! Sorry i feel like i'm high on boredom at the moment...i'll cut to the chase.

DEVENDRA BANHART

I've just started listening to his music properly and he's just so cool! I remember the first i ever heard of him was this video (below) on youtube...he's just so deliciously strange in it! I love how he says some of the lines and uses his mouth...aswell as the fact that he's sat in the middle of a BBC studio on a Persian rug, wearing a red flowery poncho. Oh and don't forget the candles! Just watch it...

And to add to his coolness, i was reading up on his background yesterday when i should have been revising ethics (snore) and found out that his parents named him 'Devendra' after 'Indra' - the Hindu god of thunder and rain, as it was suggested by the Indian religious leader that they followed. His middle name, 'Obi', is after the Star Wars character of the same name. When he was 2 his parents divorced and he moved with his mum to Venezuela. At the age of 14, he moved again with his mum (who had remarried) to Los Angeles. In 1998 he began studying at the San Francisco Art Institute on a scholarship, but whilst living in the gay neighborhood he began busking instead of attending classes. He subsequently dropped out of college in 2000, moving to Paris where he opened for several Indie rock bands. He then moved back to the USA in the autumn of the same year, played music in San Fransisco and Los Angeles before being 'discovered'...i suppose the rest is history.

Oh and i forgot to mention - he went out with Natalie Portman for a bit. He's also friends with Joanna Newsom. PLUS (sorry i'll shut up soon) he seems to have an insatiable appetite for wickedly silly attire (something that i share...i'm the only reason we still have a fancy dress box in our house haha), and he wears hooped earrings, which have been the only reason that i want to get my ears pierced for the last two years. I still haven't got round to it but i will do! I'd also love a nose piercing...but anyway here's some hip n groovy pictures of the man himself, aswell as another tune down at the bottom for you...

On another note, i've decided that i'm going give myself a post-exam treat of a copy of Monty Don's 'Around the world in 80 gardens' (i wanted Italian Gardens after being so amazed by it on the tv but not having managed to record all the episodes :( anyway i then discovered that this existed and that it's cheaper (£8.99 instead of £12.99...i think) and is 10 one hour episodes instead of 4. Plus it goes all around the world, from South America to Asia and everything in between!) and Joanna Newsom's triple album 'Have One On Me' - i've been listening to her music far too long on youtube for me not to have bought any of it yet. I may also perhaps treat myself to a camera (FINALLY). Plus i think i'm going camping in July with my dad if poss. Plus i'm teaching myself guitar and it's proving to be one of my favourite things to do. So yeah...sorry for going on, i always do this - i must seem so self involved! Deary me. Anyway, hope anyone who reads this is feeling well and happy!

Lots of love
Lucy
